Total Solar Eclipse
2024 TOTAL ECLIPSE
2024 will bring a spectacular total solar eclipses to North America (and beyond). Some parts of the country will fall on the center-line of the moon’s shadow on the earth, and observers there will witness 100% of totality (weather permitting!).
However, outside this narrow band, observers elsewhere will still be able to enjoy the spectacle of the Moon covering part of the Sun’s disc, resulting in a ‘crescent’ Sun – a partial solar eclipse. However, this can only be directly observed in safety if you are wearing Eclipse Glasses. If you are in an area of totality, you must wear the eclipse glasses up to the moment of totality, at which point they can be removed fo the few moments of the total eclipse.

OHIO TOTAL SOLAR ECLIPSE
The Ohio total solar eclipse (also the Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Missouri, Tennessee [just!], Illinois, Kentucky, Indiana, Michigan [barely!], Pennsylvania, New York, Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine Total Solar Eclipse, which will occur on April 8, 2024.
A total solar eclipse occurs when the Moon’s orbit positions it between the Sun and the Earth. As the diameter of the Sun is about 400 times that of the Moon, but is also approximately 400 times farther away, the Moon’s disc as it appears in the sky will completely cover the Sun’s disc. You can see the Sun’s corona glowing around the edges only during a total eclipse.
Note: During a total eclipse, it is safe to look directly at the Sun without eclipse glasses ONLY during the few minutes of totality. If you are not in the path of totality, you must ALWAYS wear your eclipse glasses when looking at the sun.
You can view an interactive map of the total solar eclipse and see what times it will occur in your specific location by clicking anywhere on THIS MAP. Note: Times are given in UTC, and should be adjusted for your time zone (e.g. -4hrs for Eastern, -5hrs for Central, -6hrs for Mountain, -7hrs for Pacific)
Eclipse maps have been created with Google Maps by Xavier M. Jubier.
